High brow or low brow (you know we love them both)

Rummy rum rum rhum.

August 16 is a Saturday this year and also happens to be NATIONAL RUM DAY. Wow, we could not have planned that better ourselves. What a dream. Summertime with a swizzle. Dog days with a daiquiri. We could go on forever, but then Caty would quit.

Caty’s Pick: Dark & Stormy

When the NHL lockout (a complete misnomer, do not get her started) was raging on in 2012 and she was furloughed to 4 work days a week, Caty did what any privileged little MFer without kids or other responsibilities would do: She took a couple long weekends to Bermuda. Lemme tell you, the Dark & Stormy agreed with her. The more bite in the ginger beer the better. Our pick is Q Premium Ginger Beer with the classic Appleton Estate Reserve 8 year Rum. Keep it simple. Ice, lime slice, metal straw, chef’s kiss.

Verity’s Pick: The OG Long Island

Growing up in a small town meant creating her own fun, and signature cocktail! Verity, being the genius she is, would syphon off small amounts of various liquors from her parents’ collection to hide her enthusiastic teenage drinking. A little rum here, little gin there. A splash of vodka and tequila and whatever that citrus liqueur was. Use Coke as a chaser and Bob’s your uncle. Turns out she was a pioneer of the Long Island Iced Tea. Now she adds lemon and doesn’t refill the vodka bottle with water.

Rosie “Please Don’t Drag Me Into This” Sam’s Pick: Mojito

Does anyone else turn into Jack Sparrow when they drink rum? As in, you wake up with smudged eyeliner and at least three mysterious coins in your pocket. Just me? Anywho. Now that I’m a retired bartender, I can finally embrace my true villain era: ordering a mojito. Yes, the drink that used to send me into a mild, mint-scented rage during Friday dinner rush. But now...I’m on the other side. I’ll look a bartender dead in the eye while they muddle and get lime juice in a cut they didn’t know they had. Somewhere, a younger version of me is cursing my name. Delicious. Here’s an at home recipe if you want good karma.

We generated our first report to circulate to bev alc brands. You can check it out HERE! We’re trying to understand if understanding consumer behavior at a zip code level can help brands make better decisions and give humans better products.
