Bunnies, birthdays, blooms, and… Malbec

Happy almost birthday to our co-founder Caty! You don’t look a day over whatever age old, tired parents look. What a bummer that you’re still a few years shy of eligibility for the lifetime supply of Fireball competition though, who says there’s nothing to look forward to later in life?

It’s a busy month over here with birthdays, Easter, and the most important holiday this month: National Malbec Day! Which nation celebrates this, you ask? Who knows. We got it off a completely un-vetted holiday calendar. Anyway, we’re into it, so we’re serving up our top three Malbec recommendations!

Before we jump in, here’s a cheat sheet on what to tell people for why you drink Malbec:

  1. It’s a BBW (big bodied wine) for the meat inclined (or roasted veg, shout out fiber for the veggies amongst us).

  2. Dark fruit is its hallmark, especially blackberry, dark plum, and black cherry. 🤘

  3. Over 70 percent of Malbec comes from Argentina, which we love cuz Lionel Messi.

If you’re searching for the best of Mendoza, look no further than Ben Marco Expresivo Mendoza. It’s the bottle Verity used to benchmark typicity for her Certified Sommelier exam back in the day and has somehow gotten even better with time. It’s deep, intense and toasty, and begs for a big, fat charred steak. This is a fantastic gifting bottle for that person in your life who loves big red wines. Move over, Napa.

For a budget friendly Malbec that overdelivers in flavor and value, we recommend Catena Malbec at under $20. You’re not going to have the same complexity as with Ben Marco, but this wine is a guaranteed crowd pleaser that delivers a rich and intense flavor experience that screams classic Malbec. It pairs well with red meats, especially spicy ones.

And we’d be remiss not to mention the little known OG Malbec wine: Cahors. In the 1850s, Argentina brought cuttings of the French varietal to Mendoza and the rest is history. France still produces some of the world’s best Malbec (called ‘cot’ in the region), although it’s trickier to come by than its South American counterpart. We are obsessed with Chateau De Mercues Cahors Grand Vin which in true French style is more savory and less fruity. Pair with sausage, hard cheese, or beef stew, and a side of smugness because: You fancy.

We’re working on a part 2 pilot with Gopuff. We’ll let you know when we’re live so you can give us feedback! In the meanwhile, thanks so much to everyone who has filled out a survey for us ever. It’s truly helpful. Here are our last 2 if you missed out on being our hero:

It’s only 1 question.

And this one is also only 1 question.

Cheers!
